  2. Narrative.
    1.  Squadron and Group Assembly: Carried out as planned at the Kings Cliffe buncher at 9,000 feet.
    2.  Route Over England: Departure from the assembly point was made at the briefed time (0924). Due to the fact that the 94th "B" Group was on time and the 94th "A" Group was late, it was necessary to fly to the right and later to the left of course in order to permit it (94th "A") to get into its proper position in the Division Formation. Such divergency did not cause much difficulty, and after the briefed route was contacted to the west of London, it was followed to the coast. Selsey Bill was reached one minute early (1007) at the briefed altitude of 12,000 feet.
    3.  Division Assembly Line: After the departure from the English coast, the 94th "B" Group followed the preceding formations in going to the left of the briefed course in a gradually increasing divergency. This was a necessary maneuver in order to avoid clouds seen at the briefed point of entry on the French coast. As a result, the formation reached the French coast north of the briefed point one minute early (1033) at the briefed altitude of 12,000 feet. The 94th "B" had been in the proper position (fifth) in the Division Formation.
    4.  Flight to Target: After leaving the French coast, the Division Column was followed. A gradual return to the briefed course was flown, until, at a point southwest of Paris, a point slightly to the left of course was reached. The formation flew a course parallel and to the left of the briefed course in following the preceding formations until shortly before the IP [Initial Point of Bomb Run], where the briefed course was contacted. The IP was reached ten and one-half minutes late (1222½) at the briefed altitude of 25,500 feet. Shortly before the IP was reached, the GH aircraft in each squadron took over the lead positions.
    5.  Description of Bombing Run: The Lead Squadron attacked the Primary Target visually with a GH assist. The MPI [Mean Point of Impact] was identified 60 seconds before "Bombs Away". No interference was encountered on the bomb run. The C-1 Pilot [Autopilot] functioned satisfactorily. The low Squadron attacked the Primary Target visually with a GH assist. The briefed turn was made at the IP. The MPI was identified about two minutes before "Bombs Away". No interference was encountered on the bombing run. The C-1 Pilot functioned satisfactorily. The High Squadron attacked a target of opportunity when the bombs failed to release in the lead (GH) ship. The PFF ship took over the lead after the Primary Target was passed, and led the formation to the target of opportunity which was attacked because of cloud cover over the Last Resort. It was attacked visually. No interference was encountered on the bomb run. The C-1 Pilot functioned satisfactorily. The High Squadron let-down approximately 2,500 feet before attacking the target of opportunity.
    6.  Flight From Target: After attacking the Primary and the Target of Opportunity, the 94th "B" Group followed the preceding formations in the Division Formation on the withdrawal. Deviations from the briefed course were slight. The briefed departure point from the Belgian coast was reached fourteen minutes early (1448) at an altitude of 10,000 feet. It was necessary to fly to the left of course in the flight to the English coast in order to avoid bad weather seen on the briefed course. As a result, the English coast was crossed south of Cromer at 1532, twenty-eight minutes earlier than the briefed time for the crossing of the coast. While crossing the channel, the formation had let-down to 5,000 feet at the English coast. A gradual return to the briefed course was flown without difficulty. The formation returned to base without further incident. A normal let-down procedure had been followed.
    7.  Fighter Support: As briefed.
    8.  Comments: One aircraft, 43-37524, pilot Lt Ashton, left the formation shortly before the IP was reached. The difficulty is as yet unknown, but the aircraft landed safely in France and the crew is returning to base. There were no enemy aircraft encountered. The Low Squadron reported meager, fairly accurate flak at the target. There were seven-tenths clouds in the target area and over much of the route. Contrails above 20,000 feet hindered formation flying. The Scouting Force furnished helpful weather information.
    9.  Aircraft Not Attacking: Aircraft 43-37524, pilot Lt Ashton, has been previously reported as having left the formation before the IP. It is assumed that bombs were not released, as the aircraft was not far from friendly territory at the point of turnback. The two flying spares returned as planned.

Preliminary Damage Assessment:
  1. The lead and low squadrons of this Group attacked the primary target at Sindelfingen (Near Stuttgart) Germany. Photo cover is incomplete due to the freezing up of four cameras. Bombs away for both the lead and low squadrons can be seen and smoke markers are seen falling into the target area. These markers indicate that the lead squadron bombs fell slightly left of the center of the A/D [Airdrome] (MPI) [Mean Point of Impact] while the low squadron bombs fell into the center of the target. No definite bursts can be seen on the ground.
  2. The high squadron bombed the last resort at Grosselfingen, Germany. No bursts can be seen because of clouds. Bombs away can be plotted one and one-half miles from the target, on course to the target area.
[Signed:] Thomas L. Cooper, Captain, Air Corps, Group P.I. [Photo Intelligence]

Narrative Teletype Report:
  1. No leaflets were carried on today's mission.
  2. The lead and low squadrons bombed the airfield at Sindelfingen, primary target, through 7/10ths clouds. Photographs indicate that the results should be good. The lead A/C of the high squadron had a rack malfunction at the primary which forced the squadron to go on to bomb a target of opportunity, the town of Balingen, when the last resort target was found to be cloud covered. Photographs of this bombing show only bombs away, but no bomb bursts.
  3. There were no enemy aircraft encountered, and no claims [of enemy aircraft being shot down] are being submitted.
  4. A few crews in the low squadron encountered meager, fairly accurate flak at the primary target. The majority of crews reported no flak at target. Moderate flak was observed at Stuttgart. There were 7/10ths clouds in the target area and over much of the route. Contrails above 20,000 feet hindered formation flying.
  5. Nil.
  6. PFF aircraft, one for each squadron, were employed as navigational aids and all equipment worked well. The Scouting Force furnished helpful weather information. The fighter support was as briefed. Our A/C 524-D left the formation because of some unknown difficulty shortly before the IP. It is believed that this aircraft intended to land at an emergency field somewhere in France, although nothing further has been heard from the crew. A B-17 from the group ahead of this Group was seen to spin down, burning, at 1115 hours at approximately 4826 N. - 0350 E. No chutes were observed.

Combat Crew Comments:
