      Pilot:2nd Lt. John W. Zimmerman
      Navigator:1st Lt. Orvil L. Wolz
      Bombardier:1st Lt. Gerald E. Traczewitz
  2. Narrative.
    1.  Squadron and Group Assembly: The assembly was carried out at the Kings Cliffe buncher. It was necessary, because of bad weather at the briefed altitude of 8,500 feet, to assemble at 9,500 feet. This increase in altitude was not sufficient to make the assembly an easy one, however.
    2.  Route Over England: Departure from the assembly area was made on time (0902). The Wing Leader, feeling that the bad weather on the briefed course would make the formation late, took up a heading directly for March. March was reached at 0911, the briefed time. The briefed course was followed with slight divergency [sic] in order to avoid bad weather as much as possible. Beachy Head, the departure point, was reached at 1002, two minutes early. The altitude at that point was 17,800 feet, 1,800 feet above the briefed height.
    3.  Division Assembly Line: Departure from the coast was made on course. The formations briefed to precede the 94th "A" Group, however, had not yet reached the English coast. In order to get into the proper position, the 94th "A" Group made a 360° turn to the left. By this time the preceding formations made their appearance and the 94th "A" Group was able to take up its assigned position in the Division Formation. In following the preceding groups, the formation flew to the left of the briefed course while crossing the channel. The French coast was reached to the left of the briefed point at 1018, the briefed time, at an altitude of 19,900 feet, 900 feet above the briefed altitude.
    4.  Flight to Target: In following the preceding formations on the route to the target, the 94th "A" Group flew to the left of course. The formation gradually closed in to the briefed course shortly before the IP [Initial Point of Bomb Run] was reached. The briefed IP was reached at 1112, six minutes late, at an altitude of 24,800 feet.
    5.  Description of Bombing Run: The secondary target, Frankfurt, Germany, was attacked by PFF methods. The Lead Squadron made its own sighting operation and the Low Squadron dropped its bombs on the smoke markers of the Lead. The target area was completely covered by cloud. No interference was encountered on the bombing run. The C-1 Pilot [Autopilot] functioned satisfactorily. The High Squadron performed its own sighting operation. The turn was made at the briefed IP. No interference was encountered on the bombing run. The C-1 Pilot functioned satisfactorily. The target was attacked at 1120 - seven minutes early.
    6.  Flight From Target: The briefed route was closely followed until a point south of Strasbourg was reached. Bad weather was seen ahead on the briefed route. It had been necessary for the formation to let-down after the target, as the cloud cover on the briefed route sloped gradually lower. The Wing Leader made the decision to go to the north of course in order to fly with as little weather interference as possible. His decision was confirmed by an intercepted message which stated that if bad weather was encountered on the briefed route to go north, rather than continue to the turn at Paris. A northwesterly heading was taken up and departure from the French coast was made at Calais at 1421 - twenty-nine minutes earlier than the briefed departure time - at an altitude of 15,800 feet. The formation gradually closed in to the briefed course after the departure from the French coast. It was not contacted, however, until a point north of Great Yarmouth was reached. At 1501, the formation was at 9,000 feet off the English coast. A 360° turn was made and the coast was crossed at an altitude of 2,000 feet. The point of entry was to the south of Cromer in order to avoid bad weather on the briefed route. Return to base was flown without further incident.
    7.  Fighter Support: Good.
    8.  Comments: No aircraft were lost. No enemy aircraft were encountered. Flak at the target was meager and inaccurate. Weather over the target was ten-tenths. The Scouting Force furnished adequate and helpful information.
    9.  Aircraft Not Attacking: One aircraft returned to base early with a reported mechanical failure. The two aircraft scheduled as flying spares had previously returned to base.

Operational Narrative - Scouting Force
  1. Date of Mission - 11 December, 1944.
    1. Target Attacked:  Chaff released in the Mannheim area by screening force for the "B" Task Force of the First Division Formation.
    2. Force: 94th "D" Squadron. Twelve aircraft, including two PFF ships flying as Lead and Deputy Lead, were dispatched.
    3. Position: Briefed and flew ahead of the Lead Group of the "B" Task Force.
    4. Lead Team    Squadron Lead
      Leader: Captain Norman A. Trapp
      Pilot:1st Lt. Virgil M. Bullock
      Navigator:1st Lt. Albert W. Luich
      Bombardier:1st Lt. Charles H. Hubbell

  2. Narrative.
    1.  Squadron and Group Assembly: The assembly was carried out at the Kings Cliffe buncher at 12,000 feet, 1,500 feet above the briefed assembly altitude, in accordance with the weather ship's recommendation.
    2.  Route Over England: Departure from the assembly point was made at 0908, the briefed time. The Squadron Leader, feeling that the bad weather noted on the briefed route would cause the formation to be late, took up a heading for the briefed route south of March. The briefed course was crossed and the formation flew to the left of course in order to avoid the bad weather in the vicinity as much as possible. The Squadron was two and one-half minutes early at Colchester, and in order to lose time, made a 180° turn to the left of course southeast of London. The briefed route was contacted at Towbridge at 0956 and followed to the departure point. Dungeness was reached at 1007, one minute late, at an altitude of 18,500 feet, 2,500 feet above the briefed altitude.
    3. The briefed route was followed in crossing the channel. The French coast was reached at 1014½, two and one-half minutes late at an altitude of 18,500 feet. The Squadron Leader was unable to contact Cowboy Able, the force for which it was screening.
    5.  Description of the Chaff Run: The point for the release of chaff (49°00'N - 07°55'E) [1 mile SW of Steinseltz, France] was reached one minute late (1126). The formation had been above the briefed altitude for the chaff release, but gradually let-down to the proper height (26,000'). The briefed route was closely followed on the chaff release run. The Squadron had been unable to contact Cowboy Able at any time during the entire mission. Contact with Buckeye Blue was made shortly before the release point was reached. Two PFF aircraft were employed as Lead and Deputy Lead, and chaff was dropped on instruments.
    6.  Flight From Target: Further divergency [sic] to the right of course was necessary on the withdrawal because of bad weather on the briefed course. As a result, the formation passed to the north of Paris, rather than to the south, as planned. The French coast was departed north of the briefed point at 19,500 feet. The briefed course was contacted at 1403 (50°04'N - 01°04'E) [14 miles west of Le Tréport, France] and closely followed until a point opposite Great Yarmouth was reached. In order to avoid a cloud bank in the vicinity of Cromer, the formation made a sharp left turn and flew directly to base. The English coast was crossed at 6,000 feet. Return to base was made without difficulty.
    7.  Fighter Support: As briefed.
    8.  Comments: No aircraft were lost. No enemy aircraft were encountered. Meager flak was observed over Mannheim. Weather in the dropping area was ten-tenths with haze. This made formation flying difficult and one of the aircraft lost the formation. The Scouting Force furnished the necessary weather information. Chaff was dropped with the aid of PFF instruments.
    9.  Aircraft Not Attacking: No flying spares were scheduled with the formation. One aircraft returned early when the ship became separated from the rest of the formation.

  5. Weather in the dropping area was 10/10 with haze. This made formation flying difficult and one of our aircraft lost the formation.
  6. There were no observations of military importance.
  7. Two PFF aircraft were employed as Lead and Deputy Lead of this squadron and chaff was dropped on instruments. The equipment worked well in both aircraft. The Scouting Force furnished the necessary weather information. Fighter support was as briefed. None of our aircraft is missing.
