BRIEFING OFFICER: HAVE YOU READ SPECIAL BRIEFING POOP??

Operational Narrative.
  1. Date of Mission - 26 February, 1945.
    1. Target Attacked:  The secondary target, Berlin, Germany, was attacked by PFF methods.
    2. Force: 94th “A” Group. Thirty-six aircraft, including four PFF ships were dispatched. The 401st Group furnished three aircraft and crews as flying spares.
    3. Position: The 94th "A" Group flew in its briefed position as the sixth group in the First Division Formation.
    4. Lead Teams
      Wing Lead
Air Commander: Lt. Col. James T. Stewart
      Pilot:Captain Evan A. Poston
      Navigator:1st Lt. Albert W. Luich
      Bombardier:1st Lt. George H. Plaut

      High Squadron
      Leader: Captain Frank H. Wilcox
      Pilot:Captain Robert P. Redman
      Navigator:2nd Lt. Rolland X. Madsen
      Bombardier:1st Lt. Jack P. Austin

      Low Squadron
Leader: 1st Lt. Joseph C. Robinson
      Pilot:2nd Lt. Gustave A. Bochert
      Navigator:1st Lt. Albert W. Allen
      Bombardier:1st Lt. Raymond E. Hall
  2. Narrative.
    1.  Squadron and Group Assembly: The assembly was carried out without difficulty at the Kings Cliffe buncher at the briefed altitude of 12,500 feet.
    2.  Route Over England: Departure from the assembly point was made on time (0925). The briefed route was followed until shortly before reaching Old Buckenham. The formation deviated to the right of the briefed course in order to lose time. The departure from the English coast was made from the right of the briefed point, Felixstowe, on time (0957) and at the briefed altitude of 19,500 feet.
    3.  Division Assembly Line: The 94th “A” Group got into the proper position in the Division Formation without difficulty. The Division Column was followed during the flight across the channel, and minor divergencies from the briefed route resulted.
    4.  Flight to Target: The Dutch coast was crossed to the right of the briefed point at an altitude of 20,600 feet, 400 feet below the briefed altitude. For the first half of the flight from the coast to the target, the formation, in order to stay in the Division Column, flew to the right of the briefed route. No difficulty was encountered as a result of such divergency and the briefed route was contacted in the vicinity of Hanover and followed to the IP [Initial Point of Bomb Run]. The formation passed over the briefed IP, but its bomb run was at a heading which permitted it to gradually close into the briefed route. The actual IP was reached at 1153, seven minutes late, at an altitude of 26,600 feet, 100 feet above the briefed height.
    5.  Description of Bombing Run: The target was found to be completely overcast. The 94th “A” bombed in group formation. The briefed turn was not made at the IP. No interference was encountered on the bomb run. The C-1 Pilot [Autopilot] was not used on the PFF run. All PFF equipment is reported as having performed satisfactorily for both navigation and bombing purposes.
    6.  Flight From Target: After bombing, the formation resumed its place in the Division Column and followed it on the withdrawal. There was some variance from course necessary in following the preceding groups. The Dutch coast was crossed on the return flight to the left of the briefed point. The altitude at that point was 18,400 feet, 2,600 feet below the briefed altitude. Wind shifts were responsible for the formation going to the south of the briefed course in crossing the channel. The English coast was crossed to the left of the briefed point at an altitude of 7,500 feet. The briefed route was contacted inside of the English coast and followed to base. The High and Low Squadrons went to their respective stand-off areas before landing. A normal let-down procedure had been followed.
    7.  Fighter Support: Excellent.
    8.  Comments: No aircraft were lost. Aircraft 43-38461, pilot Lt Gottschalk, was unaccounted for when the formation returned to base, but it has since been learned that this aircraft landed on the continent. All crew members are safe.

Flak at the target was meager to moderate and inaccurate. The Weather Scouting Force was not actually contacted by the 94th “A” Group, but its weather information was relayed back to this group by the preceding groups.
    9.  Aircraft Not Attacking: Two aircraft returned to base early. One of the flying spares furnished by the 401st Group replaced one of the abortive. The other two flying spares returned as planned.

Narrative Teletype Report:
  1. No leaflets were carried by this Group.
  2. The three squadrons of this group attacked as a secondary target, Berlin, Germany. Bombing was done in group formation through 10/10 clouds by PFF methods. Vertical photos show complete 10/10 cloud cover. Scope returns from Berlin appeared as briefed and the lead Mickey [Radar] Operator believes that a successful run was made. The other Mickey Operators who followed through on the lead confirm this. The lead Mickey Operator places his point of impact in the eastern section of the city.
  3. No E/A [Enemy Aircraft] were encountered and no claims [of enemy aircraft being shot down] are being submitted.
  4. Flak at the target was meager to moderate and inaccurate; most of the bursts were scattered to the left and below our formation. Meager inaccurate flak was encountered at Oranienburg and observed in the vicinity of Neuruppin.
  5. There was 10/10 cloud cover in the target area, making it necessary for this group to attack the Secondary.
  6. In the Zuider Zee at an approximate position of 5238 N – 0538 E, at 1047 hours, five ships of an unknown type were observed. One of them was moving in a northerly direction and the other four appeared to be anchored.
  7. PFF A/C were employed for navigation and bombing purposes and all equipment worked well. Fighter support was excellent. The Scouting Force was not actually contacted by this group, but its weather information was relayed back to this group by the preceding groups. Our A/C 956-L landed at Halesworth due to a shortage of petrol, but it has since returned to Base. A/C 640-C landed at Great Massingham due to a shortage of petrol, but this A/C has also returned to Base. Our A/C 461-T was last seen leaving the formation at 5309 N – 1117 E at 1250 hours and at 23,000 feet. Nothing further has been heard about this A/C.

Combat Crew Comments:

    509th Squadron:
A/C 955-L We were unable to pick up windage from lead A/C today. Was it being put out? - Lt. Quinn.
Would it be possible to give out Mickey Fixes by code reference points now that our Gee boxes are jammed? - F/O Thilem.

    510th Squadron:
A/C 665-N The High Squadron flew too low, causing a small clearance for the Low low flight of the High squadron and gave them a lot of prop wash. This happened shortly after bombs away. - Lt. Blaney

    511th Squadron:
A/C 920-O It would be a good thing if there were a long hose for pilot to use on walk-around [oxygen] bottle in emergency. I had to use a walk-around bottle today, and it was very clumsy, holding the bottle in my lap. - Lt. Brennan.

Mission Summary Report:
  1. Abortives:
    1. Airplane No. 42-97169, 509th Squadron returned early due to oxygen trouble. Investigation revealed that the oxygen swivel joint at top turret was unseated causing a drop in pressure of 150 pounds. Engineer located leak and closed off top turret valve.
    2. Airplane No. 43-37862, 510th Squadron returned early due to oxygen trouble. Investigation revealed that the oxygen line connection at the "T" fitting came loose. "T" fitting was located on ball turret support. It could not be determined as to how it came loose.
